Poster Manifesto

I just see a lot of writing that I don’t like. There’s a lot of specific things that I don’t like—I don’t like profiles, I don’t like interviews, I don’t like reviews, and I don’t like Substack—but the specifics don’t really matter. The bigger thing is I don’t like anything that bores me, and I don’t like writing that feels untrue.

I’ll tell you about what I like. I like essays. I like analysis. I like theory and I like emotion. I like writing that’s at least kind of about some type of media. Writing that takes something people know and tries to say something bigger with it. It doesn’t have to be a show or a movie. It can be a website, it can be an experience, it can be something you saw on the side of the road.

I like the thing you can’t stop thinking about, I like whatever you can’t help but get off your chest. It doesn’t matter to me so much what you write about. The moon, your gum wrapper, the line wrapping around the block. It just matters that it’s something you’re just really really dying to say.
